he Kanawha Valley's Filipino community will host a public heritage celebration, and an Elk River area church has planned a local rummage sale. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Clendenin and South Charleston.
FILIPINO HERITAGE: On Monday, Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin proclaimed October as Filipino American History Month, recognizing the heritage, culture and lasting contributions of Filipino Americans to the city and nation. The proclimation comes just weeks before the 2nd Annual Filipino American Heritage Festival, which will be held on Oct. 18 at Slack Plaza. Event organizers are currently seeking food vendors, artists, crafters, and community organizations to join the festivities. Those interested in participating can apply by emailing filipinoamericanassociationofw@gmail.com.
RUMMAGE SALE: Clendenin First Baptist Church will host a community rummage sale Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature a wide variety of items for sale. Food and refreshments, including hot dogs, drinks and snacks, will be available at the event. The sale is open to the public.
TRUNK OR TREAT: The South Charleston Farmers Market will host its first Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 4006 MacCorkle Ave. The event will feature a candy drop for multiple age groups, a Touch-a-Truck display and plenty of Halloween fun for all ages.
