SAVE A LIFE DAY: SOAR WV, West Virginia’s largest overdose prevention group, will hold its annual “Save a Life Day” today (Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025). Events are planned in all 50 states, including sites around the Kanawha Valley. Volunteers will distribute free naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, to prevent fatal overdoses. The event began as a two-county pilot in West Virginia in 2020 and has expanded each year. Kanawha County will host 17 events, including eight in Charleston. Other local events are set for Chesapeake, Cross Lanes, Dunbar, Elkview, Malden, Montgomery, South Charleston and St. Albans. A full map of locations is available online. Last year, events in 35 states distributed more than 84,000 doses of naloxone, which local advocates say helped drive a 39% drop in overdose deaths in West Virginia over the past year. This year’s event follows 35 overdoses in Charleston within a 24-hour period just over a week ago.

ORGAN RECITAL: A Charleston musician will offer a special organ recital Friday, Oct. 10. First Presbyterian Church Director of Music and Organist Jayson Keeton will present “The Music of Westminster Abbey” beginning at 7 p.m. The three-part concert, the second in First Presby’s Annual Eich Memorial Organ Recital, includes both vocal and instrumental music. The Charleston Civic Chorus and the Sanctuary Choir will join Keeton for the second part, featuring some of Westminster Abbey’s favorite hymns. The concert will conclude with a repeat performance of Keeton’s Organ Symphony No. 1, which he premiered at Westminster Abbey in July. Admission is free, but donations benefiting the church’s preschool scholarships are accepted. First Presbyterian Church is located at 16 Leon Sullivan Way in Charleston.
