Community Tidbits: Roadwork closures, 78th Majorette & Band Festival and more

The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

P

lanned roadwork will cause overnight closures on one local interstate, and the annual Majorette & Band Festival returns to the Kanawha Valley for its 78th year. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Nitro, Charleston and Dunbar.

ROADWORK: Drivers heading westbound on Interstate 64 near Nitro later this week should plan for overnight lane closures and traffic shifts. From 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, crews will be making repairs between mile markers 45.5 and 44. Work will take place each night and will include multiple lane changes in two phases. At times, the right shoulder, right auxiliary lane, and right slow lane at the Nitro interchange will close, with the westbound on-ramp placed in a stop condition. During other phases, the left and middle lanes will close, with the on-ramp set to a yield condition. In both cases, the westbound exit ramp at Nitro will remain open. Drivers are urged to allow extra time, stay alert for workers, and obey all posted signs in the construction zone.

MAJORETTE & BAND FESTIVAL: Marching bands and majorettes will once again take center stage as the 78th annual Gazette-Mail Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival returns to Charleston. The event kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Laidley Field, featuring performances from all eight public high schools in Kanawha County. Adding to the excitement, Marshall University’s “Marching Thunder” will appear as the special guest band. Attendees can grab advance tickets at Gorby’s Music in South Charleston for $8, or purchase tickets at the gate on the day of the show for $10. Proceeds from ticket and program sales will be split evenly among the eight participating high school band programs, organizers said in an event announcement. More information on the Majorette and Band Festival is available of Facebook.

DUNBAR YARD SALE: Treasure hunters will have plenty to explore during Dunbar’s Fall Citywide Yard Sale on Saturday, Oct. 4. Hosted by Dunbar Parks and Recreation, the event invites residents to set up sales at their homes across town, offering everything from household items to collectibles. Shoppers can expect dozens of stops throughout the community, with each participating address included on the official sale list. Residents who want to be added to the list can call the Parks and Recreation Center at 304-766-0223 or 304-766-0243 ahead of the event. More information is available on Facebook.
