T
he Peanut Shoppe is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and a local coat drive aims to keep neighbors warm during colder weather. Here’s the 411 from communities around the Kanawha Valley, including Charleston, South Charleston and Marmet.
PEANUT SHOPPE: Charleston’s beloved Peanut Shoppe is marking its 75th anniversary, and the community is invited to join the celebration. The shop, at 126 Capitol Street, will host a block party Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Festivities will include inflatables, clowns, face painting, balloon animals and a DJ. Admission is free. The Peanut Shoppe was founded in 1950 by Delbert Moore as a Planters Peanut store. The family-owned business sells freshly roasted nuts, popcorn, caramels, chocolates and other nostalgic sweets. It has served generations of Charlestonians and residents of the Kanawha Valley and beyond. “Come and celebrate with us,” owner Kandi Kimble wrote on social media. “We're giving back to our wonderful customers because without your support, we wouldn't be here today.”
COAT DRIVE: As temperatures begin to cool, Pray and Play West Virginia, a charitable organization in Marmet, is hosting a Winter Coat Drive. Donations of hats, gloves, coats and other winter clothing will be accepted through Nov. 17. Community members can drop off contributions at the Marmet Recreation Center, 8515 MacCorkle Ave., or at The Bloom Beauty Bar, 225 Hale St., in Charleston. More information is available on Facebook or by calling Bill Cooper at 681-587-5287.
FALL CARNIVAL: Southridge Church will host a Fall Carnival from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at 100 Eagle Drive in South Charleston, just off U.S. 119. The carnival will feature games, prizes and activities for all ages. The church will also host a Vendor Bazaar and Hot Dog Sale on the same day. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to Sunday, Oct. 26. More details are available on Facebook.
