A
local ice cream shop has introduced a new library-inspired sundae, and one local arts group is set to stage its latest musical. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, St. Albans and South Charleston.
ICE CREAM: Even as outside temperatures cool, ice cream remains a delight in all types of weather. Thanks to a partnership between Charleston’s Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream and the Kanawha County Public Library, patrons of the county’s library system now have a new ice cream flavor to enjoy through the end of September. The new “Dewey Decimal Delight” sundae was created to celebrate Library Card Sign Up Month, which takes place in September. The limited-edition sundae features a peanut butter base ice cream with mini Reese's Pieces, pretzel crumble, Reese's Peanut Butter Sauce drizzle, whipped cream, and numeric sprinkles. The ice cream is also available as a scoop. The Kanawha County Public Library has also resumed weekend service at its downtown location, opening from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. More information is available on KCPL’s social media.
MUSICAL: Musical fans, mark your calendars: the Alban Arts Center is set to stage “Descendants: The Musical” for two weekends beginning Friday, Sept. 19. The high-energy musical, cast by a dynamic local ensemble of students and adults, is adapted from the original Disney film series. “Descendants is more than just a fun, flashy musical—it’s a story about identity, friendship, and the power to choose who you want to be,” Alban Arts Center musical director Samantha Jenkins said. “We can’t wait for the community to experience this show.” Descendants: The Musical hits the stage at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19-20 and Sept. 26-27, and at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Alban Arts Center is located at 65 Olde Main Plaza in St. Albans. More information and a link to purchase tickets are available on the Alban Arts Center website.
ROCK & GEM SHOW: Collectors from around the region are gearing up for the 51st Annual Rock and Gem Show, to be held Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17, in South Charleston. The expo, presented by the Kanawha Rock and Gem Club, takes place at the South Charleston Community Center, 601 Jefferson Road. The family-friendly event features a vast selection of collectibles, including rocks, gems, minerals, jewelry, fossils, and geodes. For children, the convention offers a scavenger hunt, free crafts, a life-sized Dimetrodon skeleton replica, and more. Admission to the Rock and Gem Show is $5 per person. Youth age 17 and younger, accompanied by an adult, get in free. More information on this year’s rock and gem expo is available on Facebook.
