ommunity-wide yard sales will be held over two days in the upper Kanawha Valley, and Train Day is coming to the St. Albans Depot. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Montgomery, Charleston and St. Albans.

UKV YARD SALE: The Upper Kanawha Valley Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a community-wide yard sale from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6. Residents of all upper Kanawha Valley communities are invited to participate. “During this Friday and Saturday, we invite all individuals and organizations wishing to host a yard sale to coordinate with us to create a day to focus visitors to come to the UKV,” officials wrote in an event announcement. Interested residents are asked to sign up with the Upper Kanawha Valley Economic Development Corporation (UKVEDC), headquartered in Montgomery, to have their address registered as a participant in the yard sale. The list will be shared with interested shoppers. UKVEDC officials can be reached at 304-981-6400 or by messaging on their Facebook page.

PLAYGROUND DEDICATION: A county-owned playground will be dedicated in Charleston in September. A ribbon cutting will be held at Hoppy’s Playground, located at Coonskin Park, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18. According to the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation website, Hoppy’s Playground is the largest structure at Coonskin Park. It is located behind the lake and offers opportunities for children of all ages to explore, climb, swing, and slide. In addition to the playground, officials will also hold a ribbon-cutting for the park’s new Mountaineer Mile fitness trail. Mountaineer Mile is a statewide initiative introduced by West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey to promote health and wellness. Mountaineer Mile trails are located throughout the state. The trails are designed to fulfill the program’s mission, which is to encourage residents to walk at least one mile each day. More information on the September 18 ribbon cuttings at Coonskin Park is available on Facebook.

TRAIN DAY: You hear that train a’coming? Train Day will return to the St. Albans Depot on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual event celebrates the city’s connection to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, which first established a train depot in the town on Fifth Street in 1871. The depot was later moved to its current location on Fourth Avenue. Although service to the station was discontinued in 1963, the depot has been converted into a historical museum. During the Train Day festival, the museum welcomes community members to a free celebration featuring live music, craft vendors, food vendors, family activities, and more. Children who attend this year’s event will receive a train whistle (while supplies last), and both adults and children can ride the Hoppy Shores Train free of charge. The St. Albans Depot is located at 404 Fourth Avenue in St. Albans. More info on St. Albans Train Day is available on the city’s website.
