Community Tidbits: Neighborhood picnic, new children's choir and more

ne local community will hold a neighborhood picnic this coming Saturday, and a new children’s choir is set to launch in the Kanawha Valley. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Cross Lanes and more.

Community Picnic: Want to get to know your neighbors while enjoying some delicious food? Residents of Charleston’s East End are invited to a free community picnic from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. The event will take place at the East End Community Park, 1564 Dixie St. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks will be provided, and community members are encouraged to bring a side dish to share with attendees. The event, hosted by the East End Community Association, will include live music and is open to the public. More information on the community picnic is available on Facebook.

Indoor Yard Sale: The Cross Lanes United Methodist Church will hold an indoor yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Community members can rent a 10-foot-by-10-foot space for $25 to sell unwanted items and other goods. Tables are available for an additional $5. Interested vendors are asked to register by Sunday, April 12, by calling 304-415-3194. In addition to used goods, the event will also include breakfast, lunch and baked goods for sale. Proceeds benefit the ministries of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Women. Admission is free to the public. Cross Lanes United Methodist Church is located at 5320 Frontier Drive. Children’s Choir: A new children’s choir is forming in the Kanawha Valley. The West Virginia Voices Children's Choir, open to all students in second through fifth grades, will hold its first rehearsal in September. The choir is led by Chris Brown, a local music instructor with more than two decades of experience. According to a Facebook post, the group will meet on Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m. at a location in Charleston. Tuition is free, but guardians are asked to donate time serving the choir through carpooling, organizing events and chaperoning rehearsals, among other volunteer opportunities. An interest meeting has been set for 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, for interested students and their guardians. The meeting will include a group sing from 6-7 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session from 7-7:30 p.m. For more details or to register for the April 27 interest meeting, email director@kafawv.com.
