A
two-day class aims to teach local neighbors how to stay healthy with food, and spring bargain season is set to kick off with a community yard sale in one local town. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Dunbar and South Charleston.
HEALTH CLASS: Staying healthy takes time and effort. But it doesn’t have to be hard. One local faith group is offering a free two-day course to help you stay healthy using food and natural remedies. “Awaken and Thrive,” a free class from Charleston’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church, will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, and 6 p.m. on Monday, March 30, at the congregation’s location at 622 Kanawha Boulevard West. The class is open to the public and will feature an immersive live cooking presentation. There will also be a discussion on how to use herbs, poultices, and other natural solutions for everyday health. Attendees may sample foods, and door prizes will be available. Registration is accessible online, but space is limited. More information on “Awaken and Thrive” can be found on Facebook.
COMMUNITY YARD SALE: The weather is warming, and yard sale season is right around the corner. Dunbar First Baptist Church will kick-start the season with a community yard sale on Saturday, April 11. From 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., bargain hunters can stop by the church at 311 16th Street to shop for household items, tools, clothing, and more. Over 15 vendors will offer a variety of wares, and the church will sell hot dogs, fresh-baked bread and other delicious baked goods. Concession proceeds will benefit the church’s youth group. Additional vendors are welcome. Spots can be reserved by March 28 by emailing events@dunbarfirstbaptist.org. More information on the April 11 Community Yard Sale is available online.
ARMED FORCES PARADE: Armed Forces Day may still be a few months away, but organizers are already making preparations for this year’s Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Armed Forces Day Parade in South Charleston – and now they need your help. Officials are currently seeking businesses, community groups, and other locals interested in participating in the May 16th event. The parade steps off at noon. Anyone looking to support active-duty service members is invited to sign up, but political campaigns and/or controversial/political issues may not be represented in the parade. To register, complete the online form on the South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau website. More information on the Armed Forces Day Parade is available online.
