Kanawha County student is headed to a competitive international science fair competition, and a free workshop will help educate caregivers on how to keep their children safe during spring cleaning. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, St. Albans and Chesapeake.
SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS: Several students from Kanawha County Schools showcased their STEM knowledge at this year’s West Virginia State Science Fair, held earlier this month in Charleston. Iqraa Zaman, a student at George Washington High School, earned first place in the Translational Medical Sciences category. Her project explored complex genetic survival mechanisms in glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. Officials said Zaman’s display demonstrated “an impressive level of research and scientific understanding.” In May, Zaman will compete in the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition. In addition to topping the state’s Translational Medical Sciences category, Kanawha County School students also placed at the state level in Chemistry, Mathematics and Data, Biomedical and Health Sciences, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Engineering Technology: Statics and Dynamics, and Mathematics categories. You can see all local winners here.
COMMUNAL CROCHETING: Crochet crafters and other lovers of fiber arts will soon have the chance to take part in their favorite pastime with like-minded artisans. Hooks and Harmony, a new crocheting group, is set to launch at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23, at the St. Albans Public Library, 602 Fourth Street in St. Albans. The group, which is open to crocheters of all skill levels, will meet each Monday from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on the second floor of the library. Participants are asked to bring their own yarn and hooks and may work on their own individual projects. Attendees are encouraged to share tips and learn from one another. More information on Hooks and Harmony is available on Facebook.
CLEANING WORKSHOP: It’s nearly springtime. Many individuals and families throughout the Kanawha Valley will begin their spring cleaning efforts in the coming weeks. Caregivers may be wondering how to safely clean with children and other family members present. On Friday, March 27, Kanawha County Starting Points will host a free Kids Safe Cleaning Products Workshop. The presentation will take place at the organization’s Family Support Center, located inside the Lisa Curry Annex Building at 12316 MacCorkle Ave. in Chesapeake. The workshop begins at 6 p.m. Attendees must have children under 18 in the household to be eligible. Each registered household will receive an O’Cedar mop system and bucket of cleaning supplies. To register, call or text 304-410-2362. More information on the Kids Safe Cleaning Products Workshop is available on the Kanawha County Starting Points Family Support Center Facebook page.
