fforts are being made to lease the site of the former Park Place Stadium Cinemas in Charleston, and the Easter Bunny will begin making his rounds in the Kanawha Valley this upcoming weekend. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Chesapeake and Institute.

THEATER REOPENING: Social media was abuzz late last week with news about the possible return of the former Park Place Stadium Cinemas in downtown Charleston. WTSQ reports that Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin will join members of The Greater Charleston Theater Company and Entertainment Group for a 1 p.m. press conference today (Monday, March 16) for an announcement regarding the facility. There is also an item on this evening’s city council agenda to lease the movie theater located at 600 Washington Street East. Park Place Stadium Cinemas closed its doors after 43 years of operation in May 2024. In a statement at the time of the cinema’s closure, Goodwin said her office was “aware of other movie theater operators who have expressed interest in the space.” The city owns the building and garage at 600 Washington Street East, the site where Park Place Stadium Cinemas was once housed.

GRANDPARENT CAFE: Grandparents from throughout the Kanawha Valley are invited to a Grandparent Cafe from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17. The event, hosted by Kanawha County Starting Points, will provide grandparents with an opportunity to chat in an informal setting while enjoying coffee, tea, and pastries. Free childcare will be provided. “We know there are a growing number of children being raised by grandparents and that comes with an all-new set of challenges from raising your own children,” Starting Point representatives said in a statement. “We want to provide a space for [grandparents] to come feel supported and enjoy time with other grandparents who are walking in your shoes.” The cafe will be held at the Family Support Center, 12404 MacCorkle Ave. in Chesapeake. Attendees should enter the facility at the back of Town Hall. More information on the Grandparent Cafe can be found on Facebook.

EGGCELLENT ADVENTURE: The Easter Bunny will begin making his rounds a little early this year, with his first stop planned for Saturday, March 21, on the campus of West Virginia State University in Institute. The Eggcellent Adventure, a free community event, will feature family-friendly activities, including an egg hunt, face painting, and photo opportunities with Peter Cottontail himself. The event is open to all ages. Guests are encouraged to bring their own baskets. More information on Eggcellent Adventure can be found online.
