Community Tidbits: Peace Corps presentation, family cooking class and more

n upcoming cooking class will enable Kanawha Valley families to bond over meal preparation, and a presentation on the Peace Corps will commemorate Peace Corps Week in one local community. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Montgomery, South Charleston and Charleston.

PEACE CORPS PRESENTATION: Peace Corps Week will be held from March 1 to March 5. According to National Today, a website that chronicles the origin of national celebrations, Peace Corps Week commemorates President John F. Kennedy’s establishment of the agency on March 1, 1961. To mark the occasion, the Montgomery Public Library will hold a special presentation at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. Former Peace Corps volunteer Jeanne Smith will discuss her service in Armenia. The program is open to the public; children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. More information on the upcoming presentation is available on Montgomery Public Library’s Facebook page.

EGG HUNT: Another egg hunt has been announced in a local community. The South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Woman's Club of South Charleston will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt at Joplin Park on Saturday, April 4. The hunt begins at 1 p.m. and is open to children ages 8 and under. The hunt is open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring their own basket to the event.

COOKING CLASS: Kanawha Valley families can build bonds and learn a new skill simultaneously, thanks to a special class offered by the Step by Step Family Support Center. On Friday, Feb. 27, adults and children are invited to a family cooking class at the Risen City Neighborhood Center, 1410 Fourth Ave. in Charleston. The class begins at 11 a.m. Attendees will prepare a one-pot pasta with red sauce. Organizers say participants will learn the recipe, share a meal, and go home with an ingredient box to make the dish themselves. The event is free, with funding provided by the state Department of Human Services, Bureau for Family Assistance. Those interested in attending may register for the class at this link.
