The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

A

local university will highlight student accomplishments at the West Virginia Capitol today, and county commissioners recently made several changes to local voting precincts. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Nitro, East Bank and more.

WVSU Day: It’s West Virginia State University Day at the state capitol. WVSU students, staff, and alumni will gather at the Capitol Complex in Charleston to showcase university programs, highlight accomplishments, and meet with state lawmakers. The event, which is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., showcases the HBCU’s impact on the state. The university will provide a shuttle service from campus to the Capitol throughout the day. You can see a full shuttle schedule on WVSU’s website.

Lego Exhibit: A new exhibit is bringing the past to life in a playful way at a local history museum. The Nitro History and Wars Museum recently unveiled two new exhibit items in an ongoing series made entirely of Legos. The new features include a British Mark IV tank and a Mark V Heavy tank made entirely from the popular plastic bricks. Both vehicles were primarily used in WWI, around the same time the city of Nitro was established. The Lego versions of the tanks were created by museum volunteer Amy O'Neill. Visitors can view the exhibit, along with other museum displays, from noon to 7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Admission is free; donations are accepted. The Nitro War Museum is located at 2003 20th St. in Nitro.

Precinct Changes: Members of the Kanawha County Commission voted to make several changes to some county voting precincts during their February 5 meeting. The changes include renumbering some precincts, adding new voting stations, and relocating others. A precinct at East Bank Middle School has been moved to East Bank Town Hall, while voters at a McKinley Middle School precinct will be sent to Green Valley Church of God. Precincts have been combined at both the Dunbar Recreation Center and the Dunbar Mountain Mission Activity Center. A precinct at Ruffner Elementary has been renumbered, as have five others around the county. Officials said affected voters will receive a letter in the mail from the Clerk’s Office along with an updated voter’s registration card. A list of all changes can be found at this link.
