Community Tidbits: 'Women Caring for Women,' professor recognition and more

emale healthcare workers and their female patients were recognized in a recent celebration, and a local professor has been named a finalist for a statewide Professor of the Year award. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Institute, South Charleston and Charleston.

Professor Recognition: A West Virginia State University professor has been named a finalist for the 2025 West Virginia Professor of the Year award by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia. Dr. Barbara Ladner, an English professor, is one of five state instructors to be selected for the award. Ladner and the other candidates have a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize. Candidates will be interviewed on Feb. 9, and the winner will be announced April 9 during a banquet at the West Virginia State Capitol Culture Center’s Great Hall.

Mountaineer Hockey: Fans of the WVU Mountaineers (or hockey in general) will have a chance to see the university’s hockey team battle it out on local ice later this week. The Mountaineers will take on Eastern Kentucky at South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena on Jan. 30-31. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, and a second face-off takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 12 and under, and can be purchased online.

Women Care: Vandalia Health CAMC Memorial Hospital recently celebrated “Women Caring for Women,” an initiative that honors female healthcare workers and their female patients. The effort was spearheaded by Dr. Emily Battle, MD, a local gastroenterologist. On Jan. 22, female endoscopy patients were greeted by a female transporter and escorted to their procedure. After recovery, they were gifted with snacks, a gift bag and a pink throw blanket.
