group of dedicated workers ensured the safety of 130 sheltered animals during the recent ice storm, and an upcoming gala will help students achieve their higher education goals. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, South Charleston and more.

Animal Advocates: Icy roads and frigid temperatures caused numerous closures over the weekend and into Monday. While the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association closed early on Saturday in anticipation of the incoming storm, the shelter’s pups, kittens and other four-legged friends had plenty of overnight company on Saturday and Sunday to keep them safe, warm and fed. A crew of workers stayed the night both days, waking bright and early to clean and medicate approximately 130 animals in the building. Staff members said they were able to give the canines some quick outdoor playtime and plenty of extra snacks.

Founders Gala: Here’s a way you can help local students achieve their higher education goals. BridgeValley Community and Technical College will host the Third Annual Founders Day Gala on Saturday, April 11. The event runs from 6-10 p.m. at Berry Hills Country Club. The event brings together supporters, alumni, business partners, and friends of the school. Organizers said proceeds support BridgeValley students and programs, helping to strengthen educational opportunities and workforce development across the region. More information and tickets for the event can be found on Eventbrite.

Student Scholarships: The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation (TGKVF ) is accepting applications for its scholarship program. The foundation manages over 100 scholarship funds available to students throughout the state. Last academic year, TGKVF provided funds to more than 500 students, totaling over $1.6 million. Scholarships are available for current and prospective students, high school senior and up, pursuing a for four-year, two-year, associate, vocational, or doctoral degree. Applications must be received by Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026. More information and applications are available on TGKVF’s website.
