Community Tidbits: Cold pets, baking fundraiser and more

The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

A

local police department is reminding residents to bring their pets indoors during cold weather, and a group of teens is baking something sweet to benefit area women and children. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, South Charleston and St. Albans.

Weather & Pets: The Charleston Police Department is reminding citizens to keep pets in mind when the weather turns cold. “[L]eaving your dog tethered outdoors overnight when the temperature is around 14 degrees [as it was earlier this week] with no shelter is considered animal cruelty under state law and city ordinance,” CPD officials wrote in a post on Facebook. Both the Charleston City Code (Ordinances 10-3 and 10-4) and the state code (W.Va. Code 61-8-19) contain statutes that outline instances of animal cruelty. CPD officials advised that outdoor pets should be brought indoors during inclement weather conditions.

Bake Sale: South Charleston High School students are baking something sweet for a good cause. Students in the school’s baking club will offer sweet treats for purchase after school on Thursday, Jan. 22. Proceeds will benefit the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter for Women and Families. The shelter, which is located on the East End of Charleston, supports women and children from throughout the Kanawha Valley. More information on Thursday’s bake sale is available on the South Charleston High School Facebook page.

Kids Night: The St. Albans Parks and Recreation Department is kicking off a new year of student-focused activities with a free Kids Night for local elementary children. Kids Night will take place this Friday, Jan. 23, at the Hansford Community Center. From 7-8:30 p.m, students can enjoy games, music, prizes and more. Pizza, hot dogs and other refreshments will be provided thanks to local restaurants, including Bammy’s and Marco’s Pizza.
