A
popular Carnaval celebration that benefits a local nonprofit museum returns to the capital city, and the annual Groundhog Breakfast is set for the end of January. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, South Charleston and Montgomery.
Carnaval Fundraiser: Carnaval is returning to the Kanawha Valley. The popular annual celebration – now in its 15th year – serves as a fundraiser for the Clay Center. This year’s event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Charleston. The black-tie affair features music, food and schmoozing with fellow Kanawha Valley neighbors for a good cause. 1010 Bridge Restaurant and Catering will provide a curated selection of bites for the evening. General admission tickets are $225 per person. But you might want to hurry – as of Sunday, Jan. 18, less than 75 tickets remained.
Groundhog Breakfast: The South Charleston Chamber of Commerce’s 34th Annual Groundhog Breakfast will take place on Friday, Jan. 30, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West, 400 Second Avenue, Southwest, in South Charleston. This year’s breakfast is presented by WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals. Guest speakers include South Charleston Mayor Frank A. Mullens; West Virginia Treasurer Larry Pack; Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation President and CEO Dr. Michelle Foster; TechConnect West Virginia Executive Director Ariana Shives; and Jason Moss, Head of New Government Initiatives for Wonderschool. Tickets are $50 for Chamber members or $60 for nonmembers. For more information or to order tickets, call 304-744-0051 or email executivedirector@southcharlestonchamber.org.
Grief Share: Upper Kanawha Valley neighbors dealing with grief don’t have to face it alone, thanks to a free local support group. Montgomery General Hospital’s Chaplain Jeff Floyd will hold a Grief Sharing Group at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22. It will take place in the first-floor chapel at Montgomery General Hospital, 401 Sixth Avenue in Montgomery. Attendees will receive guidance and support to help move through the grief process.
