Community Tidbits: GoMart demolition, Winter Series race and more

The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

A

dilapidated structure is scheduled to be razed this week in St. Albans, and athletes will flock to the capital city on Sunday for the second in a series of winter races. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including St. Albans, South Charleston and Charleston.

Demolition Set: A longstanding dilapidated structure is set to come down in western Kanawha County. Officials with the City of St. Albans’ Building & Zoning Department said demolition work will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the site of the former GoMart along Route 60 near Ordinance Park. The razing is not expected to cause road closures. “We are pleased to be working in partnership with GoMart to address this property and help improve the area,” officials said in a statement announcing the demolition. “The project reflects a shared commitment to safety, community improvement, and responsible site management.”

VHS Transfer: Video may have killed the radio star, as the 1979 song from The Buggles notes, but South Charleston Public Library is once again keeping video (or, more specifically, VHS tapes) alive with their digital transfer service. The service is available at the library’s location at 312 Fourth Avenue in South Charleston. Those interested in utilizing this service are asked to drop their VHS tapes and flash drives off at the library’s front desk. Patrons can bring their own flash drive (transfer to DVD is not available) or purchase one at the library for $5. Both VHS and VHS-C are accepted for transfer; 8mm, 16mm or Mini-DV can not be transfered as part of this service.

Winter Series: The second installment of a progressive winter race competition takes place this weekend in Charleston. The Charleston Winter Series, which began with a 5K run and 3K walk on Dec. 14, 2025, continues at 2 p.m. on January 18. Sunday’s event will feature an 8K run and a 4K walk. The tournament will be held at the University of Charleston’s Pharmacy School parking lot. Registration costs $40 ($30 for students) and can be made online or on site beginning at noon on the day of the race.
