Community Tidbits: Goodwill Outlet opening, survey deadline and more

The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

T

he Kanawha Valley’s first Goodwill Outlet is set to open in Charleston, and leaders are looking for feedback to help decide the future of a former elementary school site in the upper Kanawha Valley. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Chesapeake and Montgomery.

Grand Opening: The new Goodwill Outlet, located at the site of the former Goodwill store at 215 Virginia St. West in Charleston, is set to hold its grand opening on Thursday, Jan. 29. Unlike most Goodwill stores, where items are sold per piece off the rack, items at Goodwill Outlets are sold in bulk, often by the pound, and merchandise is rotated frequently in large bins. Hours for the grand opening are set for 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds from items sold at the Goodwill Outlet will benefit job readiness programs and other efforts of the Goodwill of the Summit.

Survey Deadline: Upper Kanawha Valley residents have just a few more days to complete a survey to help decide the future of the former Montgomery Grade School site. The questionnaire, which is available online, is open through Saturday, Jan. 10. It is being conducted with the help of the WV Brownfields Assistance Centers at Marshall University and WVU. The survey features 10 questions and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Safety Night: Families and caregivers with an infant or toddler in a car seat are invited to a free Winter Car Seat Safety Night on Jan. 22. The event, hosted by the Kanawha County Starting Points Family Support Center, will take place at 6 p.m. at the Chesapeake Annex Building, 12316 MacCorkle Ave. in Chesapeake. Participants will have the opportunity to make a no-sew fleece poncho to help children stay warm and safe in their car seats this winter. Light refreshments will be available. Registration for the event can be made by calling 304-410-2362.
