The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

T

he new year has begun, and the Kanawha Valley is moving forward with winter markets, Little League and more. Here’s a look at some of the things happening in communities around the region, including Charleston, Nitro and South Charleston.

Kindness Kits: Several departments at Vandalia Health CAMC General Hospital recently assembled 125 Kindness Kits for community members. The kits are filled with hygiene products, socks, gloves, hats, first aid kits, blankets, snacks and other items. Hospital officials said the packages will be distributed to unsheltered neighbors seeking care at the downtown emergency room and among those who attend the hospital’s mobile unit outreach program.

Little League: The Nitro Little League is now accepting registrations for its spring baseball and softball programs. Registrations will be accepted online at nitrolittleleague.com through Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026. League fees begin at $78 per child, with discounts for families enrolling multiple children. Challenger fee is set at $30. Families receiving WIC, Medicaid, or SNAP benefits may qualify for grant fees through T Mobile’s Little League Call Up Grant. Grant applications open Jan. 16, 2026, and are available online.

Winter Market: The South Charleston Farmers Market opened their Winter Market on Jan. 3. The market is open each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until March 28. Shoppers can purchase locally sourced chicken, beef, and pork products. Marketgoers can also enjoy various sausages, fresh-baked goods, snacks, pepperoni rolls, and more. More information on the Winter Market can be found on the South Charleston Farmers Market Facebook page.
