The latest updates from communities around Kanawha County.

T

hanksgiving may still be two days away, but it’s not too early to start making plans for upcoming holiday events. Here’s a preview of three notable Christmas events happening in communities around the region, including South Charleston, Charleston and St. Albans.

Light the Market: The South Charleston Farmers Market will shine with Christmas spirit this winter. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the market will hold Light the Market, a holiday kick-off celebration open to the public. Several events will take place from 3-6 p.m. on Nov. 29, including photos with Santa and the Grinch, free cookies and hot chocolate, holiday workshops, local craft vendors, and a visit from the Chick-fil-A Cow. Local radio station WQBE will also be on hand for the celebration. The market lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. The South Charleston Farmers Market is located at 4006 MacCorkle Avenue South West in South Charleston.

Sounds of the Season: The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will once again ring in the season with its annual Sounds of the Season concert. The Charleston performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Clay Center. This year’s concert will be under the direction of Guest Conductor Michelle Merrill and includes a visit from Santa, among other special guest surprises. Available tickets start at $23. In addition to the Clay Center concert, WVSO will also offer Sounds of the Season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Blennerhassett School Auditorium in Parkersburg.

Winterfest: There’s a lot to celebrate at this time of year, and in St. Albans, one of those celebrations is Winterfest. This year’s festival takes place from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Roadside Park. The event includes a petting zoo, photo opportunities with Christmas characters, food vendors, craft vendors, games, prizes, face painting, balloon animals, and holiday music presented by local school groups. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is asked to call Scott Tweedy at 304-533-4872.
