rt students at one area high school are bringing holiday cheer to local storefronts, and neighbors throughout the Kanawha Valley are invited to a Thanksgiving potluck dinner at an Elk River community business. Here’s the 411 from neighborhoods around the region, including South Charleston, Nitro and Clendenin.
Movie Showing: Local neighbors are invited to a free viewing of a holiday-themed movie shot and produced in the Mountain State. On Sunday, Nov. 23, South Charleston’s LaBelle Theater will offer "Feast of the Seven Fishes" for a one-time showing. The movie tells the story of a large Italian family on Christmas Eve as they prepare for the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes Dinner. It is written, produced, and directed by West Virginia native Robert Tinnell, and filmed in Marion County, with cameos by many local residents. The movie, brought to the Kanawha Valley by the Charleston Lodge of Sons and Daughters of Italy, is set for 4 p.m., with doors opening at 3 p.m. The LaBelle Theater is located at 313 D St. in South Charleston.
Storefront Art: Several storefronts in Nitro got a cheerful sprucing thanks to students at one local secondary school. Students in Danielle Hunt’s art class at Nitro High School painted various holiday-themed displays on businesses around town. Designs include snowmen, winterscapes, and even a nod to the Miser Brothers Frost and Heat from the 1974 animated classic “The Year Without Santa Claus”. Participating businesses include the Nitro Antique Mall, Elizabeth’s Attic, the Nitro Public Library, Shima’s Restaurant, Specialty Pets and Fruth Pharmacy. You can view the students’ designs on the Kanawha County School’s Facebook page.
