A
donation drive benefits both a local nonprofit and a high school band program, and an upcoming interfaith discussion will explore Judaism as reflected in Christianity and Islam. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Nitro, Charleston and Montgomery.
Donation Drive: Do you have any unwanted items you’re looking to get rid of? Goodwill Industries of the Summit is making it easier for neighbors to donate products while supporting the Nitro High School band simultaneously. From now through Saturday, Nov. 22, Goodwill will park a trailer at Nitro High School, 1300 Park Ave., to accept unwanted (but still usable) items. Items will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Nov. 21, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 22. For each pound of donated items, the school’s band will earn two cents. A list of accepted items can be found on Facebook.
Interfaith Discussion: Charleston’s B’nai Jacob Synagogue will host a special Root and Branch interfaith discussion on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. The topic, “Judaism and its Reflections in Christian & Muslim Religious Life”, will feature B’nai Jacob’s newly-appointed Rabbi Adam Berman. The panel will also include Imam Nasir Adbussalam from the Islamic Center of West Virginia and Molly Linehan Belcher, a theology teacher at Charleston Catholic High School. The discussion will be moderated by Mark Atkinson. This event is free and open to the public. B’nai Jacob Synagogue is located at 1599 Virginia St. East in Charleston.
Decoration Workshop: It’s almost time to trim your Christmas tree and string your holiday ornaments. On Sunday, Nov. 30, the upper Kanawha Valley-based River Valley Arts collective will help you in that endeavor with their Christmas DIY Decoration Workshop. The event will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Montgomery Community Center, 612 Third Ave. in Montgomery. Attendees will learn how to create their own holiday decorations in this free, hands-on workshop perfect for families. All materials are provided, and refreshments will be available. More information on the Christmas DIY Decoration Workshop is available on Facebook.
