A
local library serves a feast of foul play in time for Thanksgiving, and here’s how you can help make the Christmas season a little more merry for local students and seniors. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including St. Albans, Montgomery and Belle.
Crime Feast: Thanksgiving and true crime may seem like uncommon (and strange) bedfellows, but history is full of case studies featuring food and foul play. In honor of the holiday, the St. Albans Branch Library’s True Crime Club will host “Crimes of the Feast” on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The event is free and open to the public. “It’s a laid-back discussion perfect for unwinding before the holiday rush, with no cooking required,” library representatives wrote in an announcement. The discussion begins at 6 p.m. at the library’s facility at 602 Fourth Street in St. Albans.
Senior Collection: Several Kanawha Valley organizations and programs have begun collecting holiday gifts for local children. But children aren’t the only group in need of cheer during this season. Montgomery Rehab and Nursing is now accepting Christmas donations that will be distributed to residents of the upper Kanawha Valley facility. “We’re accepting donations of gift cards, clothing, games, books, and entertainment items to help make this Christmas extra special,” representatives wrote in a recent post on social media. “Every contribution—big or small—helps brighten someone’s holiday and fills our halls with joy and laughter.” Donations can be made in person at the nursing home’s location at 501 Adams St. in Montgomery. For more information, call 304-442-2469 or email adtaylor@mghwv.org.
Student Sponsorship: Continuing the theme of holiday giving, DuPont Middle School in Belle is seeking local neighbors interested in sponsoring students for Christmas. Volunteers choose whether they’d like to help a male or female student, then receive an anonymous list that details the student’s sizes, needs, etc. (Children’s names are not provided for privacy purposes. Instead, a number is used to identify the pupil.) Volunteers are then asked to shop, wrap, bag, label (with student number) and drop the items off at the school by Tuesday, Dec. 16. Anyone interested in helping is asked to call 304-348-1978 and ask for Leslie Burford or Jessica Burns. More information on the Christmas sponsorship program is available on DuPont Middle School’s Facebook page
