A
local culinary program takes home top honors in a state competition, and an upper Kanawha Valley community will celebrate bridge renovations during an upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Malden, Montogmery and Campbells Creek.
Culinary Champions: Students in Carver Career Center’s (CCC) culinary program took home top honors in a recent state competition. The Culinary Arts team took home Best Dish and Grand Champion honors from the West Virginia Jr. Cast Iron Cook-Off, which was held in Morgantown. Three high school students from the Malden-based technical school (Lola Zamora, Amazing Tognoli, and Will Ellis) were accompanied by Instructor Chef Thomas Grant and CCC Principal Lisa Dorsey at the event. The evening’s menu included feta and spinach meatballs over rustic, creamy fall orzo, topped with tomato coulis and microgreens, and a delicious apple tart with meringue for dessert. The culinary team took home a total of $2,500 in winnings.
Ribbon Cutting: After nearly four years, renovations to Montgomery’s Earl M. Vickers Memorial Bridge are finally complete. On Friday, Nov. 14, city officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the bridge painting. The ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. on the bridge’s overpass. The public is invited to attend. Officials said the overpass will be closed on Friday morning during the event. Parking will be available on Route 61 and on the ramp by entering on Route 61.
Christmas Parade: The Campbells Creek community will hold its annual Christmas parade on Saturday, Dec. 6. This year marks the third consecutive year for the event, which was resurrected by the Campbells Creek Cares Committee in 2023. All local businesses, community organizations, and individuals are invited to participate in the event. “We would love to make this an even better parade this year than what it was last year,” Jessica Hudson, a parade organizer, noted in an event announcement. Lineup for the parade will begin at 5 p.m. at the large parking lot across from The Backdoor Tavern (formerly the Dairy Winkle). The parade steps off at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in participating is asked to call 304-356-6343 to register for the event.
