Community Tidbits: Community gathering, veterans ceremony and more

ne local community is hosting a community gathering featuring free food and winter clothing, while another is planning its annual Veterans Day ceremony. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Smithers, Nitro and Marmet.

Community Gathering: Upper Kanawha Valley residents are invited to a “Warmth for All” community gathering on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Gateway Center, 2 Greyhound Lane in Smithers. The gathering runs from noon to 4 p.m. and will feature free food and a winter clothing exchange. Participants can dine on soups, breads, and desserts during the event. Volunteers will collect winter clothing, and visitors are welcome to take what they need. More information on Saturday’s gathering is available on Facebook.

Veterans Ceremony: The city of Nitro will hold its annual Veterans Day observances on Monday, Nov. 10. The day will begin with a 7:30 a.m. flag raising at the Veterans Memorial Flag on Bank Street. At 5 p.m., local veterans and others will gather for a formal ceremony at the same location. The ceremony will include the presentation of a $40,000 private donation to the Wounded Warriors Project and the playing of “Taps” by Nitro High School’s Kasey Elliot. West Virginia Dept. of Veterans Assistance Secretary Ryan Kennedy will be this year’s featured speaker. More information on the Veterans Day events can be found on the City of Nitro Facebook page.

Christmas Parade: Another Kanawha Valley community has announced the date and time of its annual Christmas parade. Officials with the town of Marmet announced the municipality would hold its holiday procession on Friday, Dec. 12, beginning at 6 p.m. Following the parade, Santa will greet children at the community recreation building.
