A
chili competition raises money for hospice services, and holiday-related events begin to take shape in communities around the valley. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Nitro and South Charleston.
Christmas Sale: It’s beginning to look a little like Christmas in the Kanawha Valley. On Thursday, the annual Mountain Mission Christmas Sale returns, bringing holiday cheer – and lots of seasonal décor – to the nonprofit organization on Charleston’s West Side. The three-day sale runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. It features Christmas trees, holiday decorations, lights, ornaments, wreaths, wrapping paper, and more seasonal items to help you get a kick-start on the winter holidays. Mountain Mission is located at 1620 Seventh Avenue, near Patrick Street, in Charleston. More information on the Christmas Sale is available on Facebook.
Chili Competition: Nitro’s annual Wagging Tails & Nitro Ales fundraiser is back on Saturday, bringing the best chili cooks to the western end of the Kanawha Valley. Entrants serve up their best red, green and homestyle chili, and visitors sample and choose their favorite dish. Winners may advance to a world champion chili cook-off event. Funds raised through Wagging Tails & Nitro Ales benefit HospiceCare. The fun runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Living Memorial Park in Nitro.
Deck the Carts: Visitors to this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting in South Charleston have a new opportunity to share their creativity and benefit a good cause at the same time. On Dec. 5, visitors are invited to decorate their own golf cart, or rent one from the city, as part of the first Deck the Carts for a Cause golf cart caravan parade. Proceeds benefit The Maddox Potter Foundation, which provides financial assistance to families affected by childhood cancer. Lineup for the December 5 event begins at 5:30 p.m., and includes free cookies and hot chocolate with Santa. At 6 p.m., decorated carts will parade along D Street. That’s followed by a 6:30 p.m. drone show and the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree. More information on Deck the Carts is available online.
