nonprofit that offers support to local families has opened a new space in the upper Kanawha Valley, and one local city’s Public Works Department is collecting food for community members in need. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including Charleston, Chesapeake and South Charleston.

Garden Dedication: A community garden in Charleston will be dedicated today. A special Community Garden Dedication and Open House will be held at the East End Family Resource Center, 502 Ruffner Ave., from noon to 3 p.m. The event will include entertainment, line dancing, local vendors, a community cookout and more. Free mammograms will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and walk-ins are welcome. More information on the garden dedication and open house is available on Facebook.

Nonprofit Opens: A nonprofit that offers services to local families has opened a new location in Chesapeake. Kanawha County Starting Points Family Support Center recently opened at Chesapeake Town Hall, 12404 MacCorkle Ave. in Chesapeake. The Chesapeake center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the location at Sharon Dawes will remain open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Starting Points Family Support Center provides free direct services, information and resources to local families. The nonprofit operates in cooperation with Family Resource Networks and local agencies. Programs are funded through grants from the state Department of Human Services Bureau for Family Assistance. The new Chesapeake location will hold a public open house on Friday, Nov. 7. More information, including open house hours, is available on Facebook.

Food Drive: The city of South Charleston has begun its annual food drive. The city’s Public Works Department will collect canned and non-perishable food items through mid-November. Collected food will be donated to Heart and Hand for distribution to local families. “Our goal this year is 5,000 cans — and we need your help to get there,” officials wrote in a food drive announcement. South Charleston residents may place donations on their porch for pickup on their regular garbage/recycling day now through November 19. Donations may also be dropped off at the South Charleston Community Center, Public Works Office, City Hall, Police Department, Public Library or any city fire department location. More information on the food drive is available on the city’s Facebook page.
