A

n upcoming chili cook-off and beer event will benefit local animal rescue groups, and one local organization has begun planning a community-wide Thanksgiving dinner. Here’s the 411 from communities around the region, including South Charleston, Nitro and Marmet.

FOOD TRUCKS WANTED: The South Charleston Farmers Market is seeking food truck owners to participate in two upcoming weekend markets. According to a social media post, officials need food truck participants on Oct. 18-19 and Nov. 1-2. The market, at 4006 MacCorkle Ave. SW, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, according to its website. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nitro’s Living Memorial Park, on the corner of Second Avenue and 21st Street. Up to 30 chili competitors will vie for top honors and a chance to advance to an international competition. All proceeds from the event benefit local animal rescue programs. More information on Wagging Tails and Nitro Ales is available on Facebook.

COMMUNITY DINNER: Thanksgiving is a few weeks away, but some local groups have already begun planning community dinners for the holiday. Pray and Play, a faith-based program in Marmet, will host a free community dinner on Sunday, Nov. 16. The dinner will take place at the Marmet Recreation Center, 8515 MacCorkle Ave., from noon to 3 p.m. In a social media post, organizers Bill and Charlene Cooper said the meal is free to everyone. Dine-in and carryout options are available. More information on the Nov. 16 feast is available by calling 304-644-9197.
