A
local deputy has graduated from the FBI National Academy, officials announced Monday.
Lt. Jeremy J. Haynes, a 23-year veteran of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, graduated last Thursday, March 13, according to a release. The graduation ceremony took place at the National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
"Lt. Haynes' graduation from the FBI National Academy is a great achievement," Kanawha County Sheriff Joseph Crawford said. "Having attended the academy myself, I know firsthand the level of leadership training and expertise he has gained."
Haynes is the 14th Kanawha County deputy to complete the program, officials said. Other deputies currently employed by the department include Crawford, Chief Deputy S.D. Snuffer, Captain J.H. Thaxton, and Lt. A.R. Crawford.
Graduates from the most recent class — the 293rd session — consisted of 244 law enforcement officers from 48 states and the District of Columbia. Officials said members from 24 law enforcement agencies, 11 military organizations and four federal civilian organizations graduated from the program on March 13.
According to the FBI website, National Academy program members are nominated by their local agencies "because of demonstrated leadership qualities."
Nominees undergo 10 weeks of training in coursework that covers a variety of topics, including intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science. FBI officials say the program "serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide."
Haynes began his career with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department as a patrol deputy. During his 23 years with the office, he was promoted through the ranks of corporal, sergeant, and ultimately lieutenant.
Crawford said his office is "incredibly proud of [Lt. Haynes'] dedication to professional growth."
"I look forward to the positive impact he will bring to our department and community," Crawford said.
