ike many schools, the University of Charleston did not hold classes on Labor Day. Instead, the community became the classroom as students, faculty, coaches, and staff participated in the university’s annual Labor of Love initiative.
On Monday, Sept. 1, nearly 1,500 UC students, faculty, staff, and coaches participated in Labor of Love, the university’s signature day of service. This year’s event included a wide range of volunteer opportunities. A UC task force team organized nearly 50 community service projects – from cleanups and community beautification to meal preparation, food distribution, and outreach for those in need.
“At the University of Charleston, our mission to prepare students for lives of meaningful work, enlightened living, and community involvement is at the heart of everything we do,” explained UC President Marty Roth. “Labor of Love is more than a day of service – it’s a tradition that reflects our deep commitment to Charleston and the communities we serve. Together, we build stronger connections, meet real needs, and show what it truly means to be Charleston’s University.”
In Charleston, UC and KRT buses began transporting students from campus at 7 a.m. on Monday morning. Several UC teams also volunteered in projects on Saturday and Sunday, including the Charleston Distance Run and a cleanup at the Morri Creek Watershed. Most service projects took place Monday.
“Our mission and our commitment to community involvement are even more vital now when so many people are in need,” said Hallie Chillag, Assistant Professor of Social Sciences at UC, a Labor of Love organizer. “The University of Charleston is doing more projects than ever before to serve more people in more places. UC students, faculty, and staff are committed to serving others, and this day reflects that.”
After participating in their volunteering efforts, students and staff were afforded an afternoon of relaxing activities on the riverbank lawn of UC's Charleston campus.
UC-Beckley students also participated in projects organized by their program directors. Online students were encouraged to participate in community service from their locations.
Labor of Love was sponsored by WV American Water, Pianfetti Foundation, Poca Valley Bank and Balance Clothing Company.
