Charleston buildings closed Tuesday after gas leak

Crews hit a gas line on the corner of Virginia and Truslow Streets in downtown Charleston, prompting the closure.

A

few public buildings in downtown Charleston were closed on Tuesday after a gas leak was reported.

The W. Kent Carper Public Safety Complex and Charleston City Hall, both located on Virginia Street East, were evacuated after a maintenance crew accidentally hit a gas line at the corner of Virginia and Truslow Streets on Tuesday. Mountaineer Gas workers were on site making repairs. Local fire crews also responded to the scene.

By Tuesday afternoon, the leak had been repaired, and Charleston City Hall was reopened. The safety complex remained closed for the remainder of the day "out of an abundance of caution," officials said.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The leak temporarily closed a portion of Virginia Street East, including a portion of the roadway outside the judicial annex. The street was reopened after a few hours.

The Kanawha County Courthouse and Judicial Building were unaffected by the closure.
