Kanawha Valley under flood watch Sunday

Accumulations between one to two inches, and up to three inches of rain over localized areas, are possible.

T

he National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston has issued a flood watch for the Kanawha Valley beginning at noon on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The watch, which in addition to the Kanawha Valley encompasses most of the state, runs through Father’s Day evening.

“Several rounds of heavy rainfall will be possible today, with accumulations between one to two inches, and up to three inches of rain over localized areas,” the NWS warns.

An NWS representative said there is a threat of flash flooding due to the possibility of one to two inches of rainfall per hour.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” the warning says. “Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Extensive street flooding is possible.”

The extended forecast calls for a chance of off-and-on rain through Thursday, June 19, but the flood watch issued by the NWS in Charleston on Sunday morning applies only to Father’s Day.

“You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued,” the NWS notes.

The latest weather information can be found on the NWS Charleston website.
