A
private university in Charleston has been named one of the best schools for veterans by a national publication.
The University of Charleston (UC) was ranked fourth among West Virginia schools in the 2025 "Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges" rankings—the most extensive annual evaluation of veteran-friendly institutions.
The university was ranked 302 overall, and earned notable recognition in several other categories, including:
- Ranked #33 in the Appalachian region
- Ranked #56 among private, not-for-profit schools
- Ranked #78 for offering both online and in-person learning options, ensuring flexibility for active-duty personnel and veterans
In a press release, officials said the rankings reflect UC’s "commitment to creating an environment where veterans can thrive academically and personally."
Officials said UC provides tailored resources to help service members transition successfully into higher education, including guidance on maximizing educational benefits, personalized advising, and programs designed to support career advancement.
“For 15 years, Best for Vets has helped transitioning service members find schools that not only welcome veterans but actively invest in their success,” Jon Simkins, Executive Editor of Military Times and Sightline Media Group, said in a statement. “The record-breaking participation this year shows that higher education leaders are listening and working to create environments where veterans can thrive academically and personally.”
Military Times evaluates schools based on academic quality, affordability, and veteran-specific outcomes such as graduation and retention rates.
