teacher's aide at a middle school in St. Albans was arrested Friday afternoon after police allege she failed to report a student bringing a gun to Hayes Middle School in St. Albans.

Heather Dawn Sherrod, 46, of St. Albans, was arrested Friday, Jan. 23. She has been charged with failing to report a firearm.

According to a press release, Sherrod's charges stem from an earlier incident in which a student was found with a handgun on school property.

On Jan. 21, police say a Hayes Middle School student told Sherrod that a juvenile had pointed a gun at a fellow student. Officers say Sherrod failed to report the incident to authorities.

Later that same day, another school employee found the weapon on the student's possession on a school bus. The employee confiscated the weapon and turned it over to school authorities.

Police said the student's guardian had no knowledge of the gun, which was stolen from the Jefferson area the previous evening.

According to a criminal complaint, Sherrod admitted to knowing that she was required to report the incident, but failed to do so.

At the time of this writing, Sherrod was being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $2,500 bond.
