The city is now accepting applications for grants up to $10,000 as part of its “Heart of Our Neighborhood” initiative. The program aims to support neighborhood projects that “revitalize and celebrate the spaces that serve as vital gathering hubs,” according to a release.

“The projects this program supports are synonymous with the Hearts of Our Neighborhood—places where people gather, connect, and build community,” Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said.

According to the grant application, projects should be within city limits or primarily benefit residents of the municipality. They must also fulfill a community need, including recreational, educational, or other purposes.

“We invite applicants to submit project ideas that will enhance our public spaces and fulfill a current community need, strengthening our shared spaces, and create lasting benefits for residents throughout our Capital City,” Goodwin said.

Ideas that meet the criteria may include community gardens, neighborhood beautification efforts, youth or senior activities, playground enhancements, passive space improvements, and neighborhood safety enhancements that promote community engagement, officials said. Spaces must be accessible to the entire community and meet all required ADA compliance guidelines.

Goodwin first introduced the Heart of Our Neighborhood initiative in January 2025, during her State of the City address. She described the program as a collaboration between local businesses, nonprofits and government.

“I have asked several council members to join me in this effort, as we not only celebrate the great ideas from our community members but also bring to life their vision for what they want to see in their neighborhoods,” Goodwin said at the time.

Funding for Heart of Our Neighborhood projects will be awarded in three cycles through 2026. Applications are due at 5 p.m. on the following dates:

  • June 15, 2025, for the July 15 project cycle
  • September 15, 2025, for the October 15 project cycle
  • February 15, 2026, for March 15, 2026, project cycle

More information on the Heart of Our Neighborhood initiative is available on the city of Charleston’s website. An application for the grant program is also available on the site.
